I want to share my journey handling tax appeals at the Special Commissioners of Income Tax (SCIT). I know my first appearance in SCIT more than 15 years ago.
So, what’s SCIT?
It is a place where I go as tax agent if my client are not happy with how their income tax was calculated by the tax authority LHDN
Being in these hearings is not like watching a scene from a Hong Kong drama or a Hollywood movie.
Honestly, it’s wild!
As an accountant, I am not lawyer. I don’t dress, talk, breath or walk like lawyer.
I remember my first time there. I had to borrow a coat from the officer in SCIT.
In court, I am usually on my own, just me with a small bag of documents, unlike lawyers who might have an assistant or two and a big lawyer bag.
The judges can be intimidating. I have seen some judges who are very kind to accountants like me, but others can be pretty very tough.
Watching lawyers handle these situations is impressive. They stay cool under pressure and handle their cases with amazing skill.
No matter how well I prepare in advance, my entire argument can be sebiji sebiji in front of judges.
It’s been an extraordinary journey, with each day bringing new challenges. It keeps my passion alive.
Hats off to all the lawyers who make it look easy!
