As a junior auditor/tax agent, “taking ownership” of your work is very important, but it can be confusing.
Here are some simple steps you can take to show ownership:
1. Provide Solutions, Not Problems
If you find a problem with a task, think about a possible solution before telling your superior or managers:
While working on the current task, you may need to discuss why the existing method is not working and provide reasoning. Then, propose an alternative solution with your team.
2. Speak Up When Necessary
If you see an issue with the instructions from your senior auditor or the client, speak up and suggest a different approach.
3. Understand the Dollar and Cent
Take some time to learn about the budget for assignment, your hourly rates, how to write billing, how each client prefers to communicate (phone calls, emails, client portal), and who the client needs to report to for approvals.
4. Be Considerate On Your Leave
When you plan to take leave, inform your team in advance, make sure there’s someone to cover your work, and prepare clear handover notes for ongoing tasks.
Sending a calendar via Ms Outlook invite for your leave period and detailed handover notes can be very helpful.
