Recently, I had an eye-opening encounter with a furious client. Her complaint? “How can your people not understand my business!”

Her frustration was loud and clear—and it made me think.

In our industry, yes, the law is the law, but sometimes, strictly sticking to the books can backfire.

While my team followed the technical law and guidelines to the letter, they missed the bigger picture—understanding the client’s real-world needs.

And that’s where things went sideways.

I had a case where everything on paper looked perfect. My team applied the law by the book, ensuring full compliance.

But then came the client’s phone call—angry and frustrated. She felt misunderstood. “Your team may know the rules, but they don’t understand my business. This isn’t just about compliance!”

In her eyes, while we were technically right, we were also missing the mark.

It was a reminder that street smarts are as essential as book smarts.

In our line of work, technical knowledge builds the foundation, but how we apply it in real-world situations sets us apart.

Sometimes, you need to go beyond the paperwork, dig deeper, and truly understand your client’s business challenges.

My takeaway?

It’s not just about being technically correct. It’s about applying that knowledge in a way that solves real problems, builds trust, and delivers value to our clients.

Let’s work smarter, not just harder.

It resonates with me personally, as it directly relates to my business success, especially through utilising SME financing. Access to supply chain financing has been a vital resource in helping me grow and sustain my business. The flexibility it provides has allowed me to manage cash flow effectively and seize new opportunities. This blog is a great reminder of how essential these financial solutions have been to my journey. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to grow their business especially the SME in Malaysia !
