Today, I attended an enlightening ACCA webinar titled “Navigating Opportunities Beyond Audit – Empowering Practitioners Amidst Audit Exemption Changes.”

It was a thought-provoking session that coincided with my real-life challenges—signing and reviewing audit assignments for financial year-end 30 June 2024.

Here’s what I gained from the two-hour session:

• A clear understanding of Malaysia’s audit exemption changes and their impact on Small and Medium Practices (SMPs).

• Proven strategies to diversify services and grow practices beyond traditional audits.

• Real-life success stories from global experts in Ireland and Singapore.

Yet, while listening to these insights, one pressing question kept circling my mind: Is audit exemption a blessing or a curse?

Undeniably, the revenue impact is real. Audit fees, once a reliable income stream, are taking a hit as audit exemptions become more prevalent.

But as Dato’ Lock Peng Kuan wisely pointed out during the session, it’s the bottom line that truly matters. Stagnant fees and rising costs are the real challenges.

It’s clear that we can no longer cling to old ways of doing business.

I also reflect on the relevance of audits for single-shareholder/director companies or husband-and-wife-run Sdn Bhds. For these entities, audits often feel redundant, with limited value to their stakeholders.

This shift, though painful, is also a call for transformation. Stepping out of our comfort zones is not an option—it’s a necessity.

The webinar reinforced the importance of providing value-added services, such as tax planning, financial advisory, and business restructuring, to help clients navigate their evolving needs.

The question is not whether we can survive audit exemption, but whether we can thrive by embracing the opportunities it brings.

For SMPs like mine, it’s time to adapt, innovate, and grow.

The future may look different, but I choose to see it as a door opening to greater possibilities.

Change is never easy, but it is inevitable. Let’s embrace the change.
