Tuesday afternoon.
A Notice of Assessment, Form JA, arrives in your MyTax inbox.

You open it.
“Wah, why so much additional tax?”
You immediately WhatsApp your tax agent.
“This is wrong. We want to appeal.”
Then you add.
“Wait until we finish the busy period first.”
That sentence is where the danger begins.
Chasing customer payments.
Handling payroll.
Arranging supplier payments.
Company trip.
Your child’s graduation ceremony.
Busy today.
Busy again tomorrow.
Five weeks pass.
You finally hand the documents to your tax agent.
“Come, let’s explain to LHDN.”
Your tax agent checks the date.
“Boss, the 30 days are already over.”
You reply.
“But I only have time to handle it now leh.”
Here is the problem.
Your work can wait in line.
Your tax appeal deadline will not wait for you.
Under Section 99(1),
Form Q generally must be submitted within 30 days after the Notice of Assessment is formally served.
The clock starts from the date it is served.
Not from the date the boss has time to read it.
MyTax now has e-Rayuan Taksiran.
For cases within its scope,
you can submit Form Q online,
or use Form N to apply for an extension of time to appeal.
Submission is easier.
That does not mean the deadline is longer.
The boss may ask.
“If we are late, isn’t there still Form N?”
Yes.
But Form N is an application for an extension.
Approval is not automatic.
You must explain why you submitted late,
with strong reasons.
Prolonged hospitalisation.
Natural disasters.
Other reasonable and valid circumstances.
“The company has been very busy lately.”
Do not assume that sentence will get your application approved.
Also.
Your appeal grounds cannot simply be.
“The tax is too high.”
“The boss is unhappy.”
“We did not earn that much.”
Which adjustment are you disputing?
Why is it wrong?
Where are the invoices, agreements and working papers?
The boss can be very angry.
But the appeal grounds must be very specific. 😂
When the notice arrives.
Record it that day.
Immediately confirm the service date and deadline.
Send it to your tax agent promptly for review.
Do not wait until Day 29,
before looking for your first supporting document.
You may have grounds to seek a tax reduction.
But do not let one “Settle later”,
leave your company having to apply for an extension first.
