Running a business in Malaysia is already tough. Cash flow pressure. Staff turnover. Customers pushing for discounts. Competitors slashing prices.

Now add one more burden … MITRS from LHDN, after MBRS from SSM.

The Malaysian Income Tax Reporting System (MITRS) is no longer a “small matter”. It is a legal requirement.

Companies and individuals must now submit key financial documents to LHDN: audited accounts, unaudited accounts, directors’ reports, profit and loss statements, even winding-up papers.

On paper, MITRS looks like “just another filing”. In reality, it is extra weight on the shoulders of SME bosses. Under the rules, documents must be submitted within 30 days after the tax filing due date.

You may argue : isn’t Malaysia under a self-assessment system?

In the past, taxpayers were only required to compute chargeable income, pay tax due, and file the return. Audited financial statements were not submitted upfront.

Only when LHDN came knocking for an audit, did taxpayers hand over their audited accounts.

That chapter is now closed. MITRS changes the game.

SME bosses cannot afford to ignore MITRS. Closing your accounts and audit early is now critical, because any delay creates tax risks.

The old habit of sending documents last minute will no longer work … your tax agent simply cannot perform miracles under such tight deadlines.

And with LHDN closely monitoring compliance, MITRS leaves little room for excuses. Late or missing submissions will only increase your audit risk.

SME bosses, do not underestimate MITRS. It is not a small box to tick. It is a system designed to catch those who delay, those who ignore, those who assume “my accountant will settle everything.”

The truth?

Accountants and tax agents are also over-burdened. MITRS shortens our timeline. We need your cooperation more than ever.

MITRS is here to stay. It is part of Malaysia’s digital transformation agenda to a fairer system, transparent records, stronger compliance.

So here is my caution :
Act now,
Plan early,
Support your tax agent, and
Stay ahead of LHDN.
