Starting as a generalist in the early stages of an accounting career can offer advantages.
I share my thought with two of our colleagues Ms Khaliesah and Fatira. Let’s delve into why in our “Get-Connected Session”webinar on 7/9/23 as I am the moderator:
1. Broad foundation
As a generalist, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of various accounting areas, providing a strong foundation for later specialization or leadership roles.
2. Discovering interests
By experiencing different areas of accounting, you can discover what truly interests you and where you might want to specialize later on.
3. Flexibility
With a broad knowledge base, you can easily switch between different roles or departments, offering more job opportunities and mobility.
4. Better networking
Engaging with professionals from various accounting sectors will help you expand your network, which can be beneficial for future career opportunities.
5. Holistic viewpoint
A generalist approach can help you see the bigger picture, understanding how different accounting functions interrelate.
While being a generalist can be advantageous, especially early in one’s career.
The journey from generalist to specialist (if one chooses) can be viewed as a progression from breadth to depth in one’s accounting career.
